Herbie Mann - Returns to the Village Gate

By 1961, flutist Herbie Mann was really starting to catch on with the general public. This release, a follow-up to his hit At the Village Gate (two songs are from the same gig while three others actually date from seven months earlier), features Mann in an ideal group with either Hagood Hardy or Dave Pike on vibes, Ahmed Abdul-Malik or Nabil Totah on bass, drummer Rudy Collins and two percussionists. Mann really cooks on four of his own originals, plus "Bags' Groove," blending in the influence of African, Afro-Cuban and even Brazilian jazz. Worth searching for. - AMG

Besides the superb core band including pianist/director Alfredo Valdes Jr., Chocolate Armenteros, Jose Mangual Jr., Andy Gonzalez, Mike Collazo, Pupi Legarreta et al, Descarga Del Milenio also features guest conguero Ray Barreto, and legendary flautists Jose Fajardo and Eddy Zervigon. Terrific vocals by Jimmy Sabater, Frankie Morales, and Melcochita. Chet Baker - The Art of the Ballad (1998)

MP3 320Kbps RS.com 157mb 5% File RecoveryGenre: JazzCduniverse.com:This is part of Prestige's The Art Of The Ballad series. The ballad was jazz trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker's specialty; much of his recording career was devoted to the exploration of jazz standards. This extremely romantic compilation brings together tracks of this ilk from the late '50s and mid '60s, many of the recordings being made overseas. Baker's approach is extremely natural, melodic, and deceptively, disarmingly simple. He plays in clear toned, spacey, lyrical lines that ever so subtly twist the melodies, and sings barely above a whisper on the last two of the 13 tracks in straight toned, haunted phrases that echo his trumpet work. Highlights here include a dreamy version of "Alone Together" with a star-studded line up that includes Pepper Adams, Bill Evans, and Herbie Mann; a swinging "When Lights Are Low"; and a sweet and sultry "Indian Summer." THE ART OF THE BALLAD is perfect romantic late night listening.Allmusic.com:All but two of these 13 tracks date from the late 1950s (the other two were done in 1965), and while Baker's talents were undimmed at this point, this wasn't his best era recording-wise, in terms of either material or bands. For his best you should turn to the earlier Pacific Jazz discs, but this is still a good set of slow and sentimental Baker for those who have heard the peak stuff in this vein and want yet more. "Autumn in New York," recorded in Italy with a string orchestra, is one extreme of his sentimental predilections, yet there's also stuff in a far more straight-ahead vein with the likes of Bill Evans and Kenny Burrell among the backup musicians. "Almost Like Being in Love" is a standout, Baker's trumpet taking on an oddly echoing tone, though with its sharp bebop rhythm it's not really a ballad. Not many vocals on this set, but it does close out with a couple of good Baker- sung standards, "I'm Old Fashioned" and "My Heart Stood Still."
Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet, flugelhorn); Zoot Sims (alto & tenor saxophones); Herbie Mann (tenor saxophone, flute); George Coleman (tenor saxophone); Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone); Al Haig, Renato Sellani, Bill Evans, Kirk Lightsey, Bob Corwin, Kenny Drew (piano); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Paul Chambers, Franco Serri, Herman Wright, Earl May, George Morrow (bass); Philly Joe Jones, Gene Victory, Connie Kay, Roy Brooks, Clifford Jarvis (drums)

Herbie Mann - Mellow

Not a high water mark in Herbie Mann's recorded output, Mellow was released by Atlantic Records after dropping him from their roster. Made up primarily of outtakes from mid- to late-'70s recording sessions, the album sounds like the hodgepodge it is. Highlights include a take on Milton Nascimento's "Cinnamon Flower" and a lengthy version of Mann's classic "Memphis Underground," recorded at the 1977 Montreux Jazz Festival with guests Sonny Fortune, David Newman and the Brecker Brothers. The low point arrives with the opening track, a cover of Bob Marley's "Bend Down Low" left over from the Reggae sessions, in which Mann actually sings the lead vocal. - AMGArtist: Herbie MannAlbum: MellowYear: 1977 (Live in Montreux)Label: Atlantic (1981)Total time: 45:25

Arturo Sandoval mi pasion por el piano

Several non-keyboard jazz icons, including drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Charles Mingus, have released recordings as pianists. On this release, the Cuban-born, Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Arturo Sandoval joins that elite list. Backed by drums, percussion, bass, and tenor saxophonist Ed Calle, Sandoval unveils his suave and swinging pianisms, which spring from several influences. The rhapsodic romanticism of Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans is evident on Sandoval's "Marianela Says Goodbye," from his soundtrack to the HBO movie For Love or Country, and on Armando Manzanero's bolero, "Esta Tarde Villover." On the finger-busting "All the Things You Are," Sandoval sounds like his former Irakere bandmate, Chucho Valdes. Another standard, "Stella by Starlight," swings in a Cuban clave groove, while "D.A.S.S." moves with a bossa nova lilt. Sandoval's sensitive reading of Michel Legrand's "Windmills of Your Mind" is the most evocative track on this recording, which reveals another side of Arturo Sandoval's genius. --Eugene Holley Jr.Code:

Herbie Mann - London Underground

During the 1960s and '70s, Herbie Mann continually searched for new playing contexts in which to place his flute. In December 1973, he traveled to London for five days of recording with a group of British rock musicians. The result was London Underground, an album tilted much more in a rock direction than the soul and R&B-drenched recordings he had been making for the previous five years. Highlights on this album include the Rolling Stones' "Bitch" (then-Stone Mick Taylor played guitar on this album), Thunderclap Newman's "Something in the Air," and "Paper Sun," from the Traffic canon. The real highlight, however, came about with the addition of Stephane Grappelli on the Donovan pop hit "Mellow Yellow." With guitarist Albert Lee adopting a Django Reinhardt stance, the cut is reminiscent of the old Hot Club of France recordings in the '30s. There are a couple of clunkers here ("Layla" doesn't work), but for fans of late-'60s/early-'70s rock, not a bad ride. - AMG Artist: Herbie Mann Album: London Underground Year: 1974 Label: Wounded Bird (2000) Total time: 44:39 Personnel: Herbie Mann (Flutes) Mick Taylor (Guitar) - 1-3,6,7 Albert Lee (Guitar) Pat Rebillot (Keyboards) Fuzzy Samuels (Bass) - 1-4,6-8 Aynsley Dunbar (Drums) - 1,3-5,7,8 Ian McDonald (Alto Saxophone) - 1 Robby McIntosh (Drums) - 2,6 Stephane Grapelli (Violin) - 5 Al Gorry (Bass) - 5 Armen Halburian (Percussion) - 8 Tracks: 1. Herbie Mann: At the Village Gate (1961)

MP3 320 Kbps | 92 Mb (covers inc.) | Live recording Remarkably few of flutist Herbie Mann's recordings are available on CD, but fortunately this one did get reissued. Mann's hit version of "Comin' Home Baby" from this live set became his first big hit. Composer Ben Tucker plays second bass on that cut, and Mann's other sidemen include vibraphonist Hagood Hardy, bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik, drummer Rudy Collins, and Chief Bey and Ray Mantilla on percussion. In addition to "Comin' Home Baby," Mann and his men perform memorable versions of "Summertime" and "It Ain't Necessarily So"; the latter is 20 minutes long. Herbie Mann - Plays the Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd (1965)

mp3@320Kbps | 64Mb | Total time: 28:33 Flutist Herbie Mann on this out-of-print LP performs 11 songs from a famous Leslie Bricusse-Anthony Newley musical. Joined by an orchestra arranged by Ray Ellis (and including either Chick Corea or Roger Kellaway on piano), Mann plays well enough. However, the only one of the 11 songs remembered today is "Who Can I Turn To," and the renditions of the material are so brief (only two songs are longer than three minutes) as to be unadventurous and rather superficial. One of Mann's less significant projects of the 1960s. - AMG Personnel: Herbie Mann (Flute) Mark Weinstein (Trombone) John Hitchcock (Trombone) Chick Corea (Piano) - 1,2,4,5,7,9,11 Mundell Love (Guitar) - 1,2,4,5,7,9,11 Earl May (Double Bass) Bruno Carr (Drums) Dave Pike (Vibraphone) - 1-3,5-8,10 Carlos "Patato" Valdes (Conga) Roger Kellaway (Piano) - 3,6,8,10 Gene Bertoncini (Guitar) - 3,6,8,10 Turk Van Lake (Guitar) - 4,9,11 Ray Ellis (Arranged and Conducted) Tracks: 1. The Joker 2:37 2. Feeling Good 3:26 3. Where Would You Be Without Me? 2:20 4. It Isn't Enough 2:26 5. Look at that Face 2:25 6. This Dream 1:59 7. Who Can I Turn to 2:15 8. The Beautiful Land 2:10 9. My First Love Song 4:16 10. Sweet Beginning 2:00 11. OCHO: OCHO III

This rare album is the last one of a serie of three recorded by OCHO, a legendary and seminal group in the NuYorican "latin jazz" scene of the early 70s. OCHO's leader and arranger, CHICO MENDOZA, produced an astonishing blend of soul, funk, Latin, jazz, and other styles mixed all together. The "groove" is irresistible! (CB) ----------- ALBUM REVIEW This is the third and toughest to find album recorded by the legendary Latin group OCHO, from the early 70s. The repertoire brings a Latin version of James Brown's "Hot Pants Road" - done in a heavy funky style - and other nice cuts include "Guaguanco Rumbero", "Ritmo De Pollos", and "Anibondad", all Latin numbers with a groovy sound that was bursting out of the Latin "nuyorican" scene during the 70s. (By CB) ----------- : "PÁ GOZAR!" ----------- PERSONNEL: Chico Mendoza - leader, piano & vibes Andy McCloud - bass Charlie Marshall - tenor sax & flute Herbie Morgan - tenor, soprano sax & flute Xavier Q. PETE ESCOVEDO: FLYING SOUTH

--------- PETE ESCOVEDO Pete Escovedo has been a major force in Latin music since the late 1960's, and his versatility has resulted in success in several areas of music, from Latin jazz and salsa to rock and Latin pop. Growing up in Oakland, Escovedo was surrounded by music throughout his childhood. His father sang with some Latin big bands. Pete played the saxophone in high school and soon switched to vibes. When pianist Ed Kelly needed a percussionist, Escovedo found his calling. He and his younger brother, the late Coke Escovedo, both developed quickly as percussionists and became greatly in demand for gigs in Northern California. With their youngest brother Phil Escovedo playing bass, the Escovedo Bros Latin Jazz Sextet was formed. The group broke up in 1967 when Carlos Santana hired both Pete and Coke for his Latin rock group. After touring with Santana for the next three years (he has rejoined him a few times since), Pete and Coke founded the 14-piece Latin big band Azteca, recording two albums for Columbia. When the band grew to 24 members, it became too expensive to keep together although the music was quite impressive. Since that time, Pete has performed in a countless number of settings including with such notables as Herbie Hancock, Woody Herman, Cal Tjader, Tito Puente among many others. He started using his daughter, Sheila E. in the mid 1970's when she was still a teenager; they first recorded together in 1976 with Billy Cobham and have worked together many times since. Since Azteca, Escovedo has also frequently led his own Latin jazz band, sometimes also including his other children Juan, Peter Michael and Zina. Pete Escovedo has recorded as a leader for Fantasy (co-leading dates with Sheila E.) and Concord (including their Crossover, Picante and Vista subsidiaries). (By Scott Yanow, All Music Guide) --------- ALBUM RELEASE Flying South is the latest release from Jazz Superstar Pete Escovedo, and is another winner by this talented musician. It's a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I'm more than happy to announce that’s exactly what I must say about this one. There simply is NOT a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all, with each song standing tall on it's own. These days it’s a very rare CD on which every single song is good or better than the one before it. This CD is certainly one of those rare CDs. If you’re a Pete Escovedo fan this is a CD your collection flat cannot be without. In fact, this is one of those CDs that you don’t even have to be a fan of Escovedo, or even Jazz to know is good. It’s just good music. ---------- --------- LabeL: CONCORD PICANTE Year : 1997 PERSONNEL: Pete Escovedo (vocals, timbales, drums, percussion); Nikita Germaine, Lalah Hathaway, Pastiche (vocals); John Santos (vocals, bata drums, drums, percussion); Gerald Albright, Malacio Magdaluyo, Najee, Norbert Stachell (flute, saxophone); Robbie Kwock, Louis Fasman (trumpet, flugelhon); Jeff Cressman, David Gregoric, Marty Wehmer (trombone); Wayne Wallace (trombone, piano, keyboards); George Duke, Murray Low, Rebeca Mauleon, Dave Matthews (piano, keyboards); Ray Obiedo (piano, keyboards, guitar); David Yamasaki (guitar); David Belove, Mark VanWageningen (bass); Francisco Aguabella, Harold Muniz (bata drums); Sheila Escovedo, Peter Michael Escovedo, Juan Escovedo, Paul Wageingen, Juanita Escovedo (drums, percussion); Andy Narell (steel pans).
